Dear Zoo Live

Dear Zoo has always been a favourite in our house! So when we were invited to go and see the fabulous new show I jumped at the chance.

In April this year the ‘Dear Zoo Live’ tour bus was stolen. The end of their spring tour had to be cancelled, and the future of this charming production hung in the balance.

Incredibly an anonymous donor came to their rescue, and they are now proud to announce they are raring to go again. They got in touch and invited us along – eek, exited muchly!

We counted down the days…

boo loves a theatre show! The Day finally arrived, I grabbed him straight from school and we made our way to maidstone. As we approached the theatre a queue of excited small ones waited impatiently gripping their parents hands. Boo spotted a sweet shop so we grabbed some ‘naughties’ and joined the back of the line.

Maidstone theatre is a lovely venue – a great location to take small ones for an introduction to theatre. We found our seats, grabbed a booster (conveniently available as you walk in) got comfy and cracked open the treats. Sat directly behind us was a little boy happily munching on popcorn (he had a clever mummy, who had pre packed it in little zippy bags) then the moaning started “why didn’t I choose popcorn, ohhh I wish I had popcorn” and so the whining continued. Eventually his (superstar, fabulous) mummy tapped me on the shoulder and passed me her ‘spare’ popcorn bag! Hugely appreciative boo got stuck right in. Wish I was that organised!! The lights dimmed and the show began.

Boo is now six and I wasn’t sure if he’d outgrown this stage – clearly not – he was transfixed as the story unfolded. It was super simple for children to follow, of any age. I particularly loved the audience interaction. The main characters included the audience throughout the show with hisssssing snakes, silly songs, childish humour and the lovable animals of course. The cheeky monkey was a great hit and the leaping frog excited the children as they squealed with delight. Boo really enjoyed guessing what was in each zoo crate as they were heaved onto stage. He knew the story better than I had realised, guessing correctly every-time.

There was bundles of colour, music and atmosphere. Don’t be put off thinking your little ones are too young! There was even a couple of newborns there, while lots of parents had to get up and down to do toilet trips or deal with a tantrum. It didn’t effect the show at all. The length was perfect too, around 50 mins. No interval meant it didn’t loose momentum and kept everyone glued.

Sadly the show came to an end, the lights went up and we made our way into the foyer. “Mummy look look look…” The main characters had gathered to meet all the children. What a special touch. Boo was delighted and waited patiently to have his picture taken.

He bounded up to them telling Sam “I loved your show” – and here is the photo!

If you get the chance, book it up. It’s such a fantastic introduction to the theatre and really brings little imaginations to life. Boo will never see the book the same again.
